Coaching has a long history as mentoring. It has been with us since the dawn of time. It has taken many shapes, it went under many names, but it has always been with us and among us. Perhaps it is part of the natural order of things. The re-emergence and development of coaching in the 19th and 20th century refined coaching to what it is now, but the need for coaching was ancient.

This report is the outcome of research around best practice and current theory on the subject of coaching in the workplace. The practical application of the overall research is described in a case study around the research for and design of a coaching strategy for an NHS Primary Care Trust in London with a workforce of approximately 3,500 staff across a wide geographical area covering 4 London boroughs.

The Youth coaching program (YCP) is a coaching program that is designed for youth (teens). It’s a gateway to confidence, Love, success, health, and wealth that are part of a leader in everyday life. Most of the teens' problems are with themselves and when they don't solve them they start creating problems with others. The YCP program is a journey where teenagers take their quest for achieving their goals and fulfill their dreams accompanied by a coach who helps them to take that journey through a clear process to stay on track to reach their goals successfully.

In the 21st century, the idea of managing has changed; command and control in leadership is no longer the best way to manage people and lead companies and associations. Coaching is becoming a popular way to think about how to manage. The trendy advice is: Don’t be a boss, be a leader! Don’t be a manager, be a coach! The idea of a leader is combined with being a coach. Indeed, collaboration and coaching have proven to be the most effective methods for managers to lead. If a manager seeks real long lasting success, he/she surely wants to behave like a leader, not like a boss. Consequently, developing the ability to coach others is a must. Nowadays, it is an essential skill which is required to be a successful manager in order to accomplish long-term positive results. Nevertheless, what is a manager? Why are managers needed in the first place? What is a coach? What does it mean to be one? And how does it apply in the workplace?

In this assignment I will discuss the key coaching skills needed by a coach. I will cover the areas of giving feedback, making suggestions, giving advice, empathy, listening skills and communications skills. I will also discuss how to make lasting change in clients’ lives, raising awareness, common pitfalls a coach faces, levels of listening, intuition and what part it plays, as well as examples of dialogue to support these. I will show how these key skills can affect and the client, the coach-client relationship as well as influence the effectiveness of the coaching session.

Coaching in the workplace is a topic that is attracting the interest of many companies as a tool that could be added to their strategic initiatives aimed at responding to the challenges in their environment. The business environment of today is marked by accelerated technological advancement, the rise of social media which is challenging the traditional communication patterns, as well as the perspectives and expectations of the new generations that are entering the labour market.
